30 ACRES with
EARTHEN and STRAWBALE SOLAR HOME
****THIS IS YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO APPLY YOUR
OWN STYLE TO A STRAW BALE HOUSE!****
The Cob cottage
(i.e. “monolithic adobe” made with natural, local materials), built in 2004,
has 24” thick walls. Radiant heat under earthen floor feels cozy underfoot;
unique bamboo ceiling; kitchen has custom cabinets with marble
counter and bamboo trim, half wood burning/half electric stove, custom Dutch
door, large south passive-solar windows and skylights; bathroom has
whirlpool tub surrounded by mosaic art; utility room has access to
sleeping loft. Plastered inside and out with lime over earthen
plasters, the cottage “breathes,” and has a wonderful cozy atmosphere.
Other art includes decorative support columns around windows, colored
glass, wall niches and bas relief sculptures on interior and exterior walls.
The second unit, the
strawbale, is yet unfinished: owner got too old and tired and ran out of
money. It is a story and a half, cathedral ceiling with balcony, a large
living room/gathering space. It has a full basement, and is intended to be
connected to the cob cottage via a breezeway. This unit was intended to be
heated with radiant heat, extended from the cottage, and/or a hybrid
Rumford/Kiva fireplace. Buyer will have opportunity to finish as
desired. Basement is lined with Faswall blocks, which are made of
recycled materials and cement. Both structures have clay tile roofs.
Environmental principles were applied in the entire building process. Area
of both is about 1600 square feet.
The off-grid solar
electric system with OutBack inverter, OutBack
MX60 MPPT Charge Controller, 48 volt
nominal L-16 batteries with Hydrocap Catalyst Battery Vents (for
reduced battery watering), all located in a separate storage building.
There are 24 solar panels.
