Photovoltaic Modules Make electricity from free, quiet, non-polluting sunlight. No
moving parts.
Solar Cells convert sunlight (light not heat) into DC
electricity. Cells are wired together and sealed to form a module. Modules are
normally constructed with a low-iron tempered glass cover,
anodized aluminum frame, ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) around the cells, tedlar
back cover and a junction box. Two or more modules are connected together to
form an array. When modules are parallel connected, the voltage output is
the same as one module and the amps are added together. Two 12 volt modules
series connected will have 24 volt output with the same amps as one module.
Single crystal cells are dark gray or black. Poly-crystal cells are blue
speckled. Some large modules are 18 volt instead of 24 volt. These can be used
for charging 12 to 48 volt batteries by using the proper MPPT charge
controller.
MC Connectors - Modules with
these Multi-Contact Connectors do not have a regular junction box. Instead they
have pre-wired leads with a male or female plug. These plugs are easily
connected in series for 24 volt and higher voltages. Special wiring cables
are ordered separately to run between modules and combiner box. These durable
connectors can save installation time and are popular in larger systems. |

UniSolar Amorphous Modules Durable-No Glass– Good Low Light Output
Cells are non–crystal with 3 layers to absorb
different light frequencies. Cells are made by depositing a thin film of silicon
material on stainless steel sheet metal. A steel back is added for stiffness.
Module is encapsulated in UV stabilized polymers and framed in anodized
aluminum. Bypass diodes are connected across each cell, enabling the modules to
produce power even when partially shaded. US64 and US32 have junction box, US5
and US11 have 8’ wire
lead. A blocking diode or charge controller must be used between battery and
module. UL listed. 20 year factory warranty.

| Small modules are a good match to run hot
water circulating pumps, small fans for composting toilets or attic
ventilating, fence chargers, gate openers, remote lights, radios, etc. Keep
idle car and tractor batteries charged. Batteries will run down on their
own, even without a load connected. A lead acid battery should be kept fully
charged to minimize sulfation, which lowers capacity and shortens life.
Recharge idle batteries monthly. |
